Turkey: 22 Killed as Kurdish Rebels Attack Border Post

Turkish state news reports that 22 people have been killed in recent clashes between Turkish forces and Kurdish rebels in the southeastern province of Hakkari.

The Anadolu Agency reports that the governor of Hakkari Province said 22 people, including six Turkish soldiers and 14 rebels, were killed Sunday morning in an attack by forces of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party on a government security post. Twenty-one others, including civilians, were reportedly injured in the clash.

The Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or more commonly known as the PKK, has been violently demanding autonomy for the Kurds since 1984. Roughly 45-thousand people have been killed in clashes between the Turkish government and the PKK.
