EU Examines French Request to Monitor S.Korean Car Exports

The European Commission is examining a request by the French government to monitor South Korean car exports to Europe.

EU Trade Commission spokesman John Clancy said the commission is carefully considering the French request for prior surveillance on car imports from South Korea.

European trade experts say the European Commission might accept France’s request, but it remains unclear if the acceptance will lead to the reintroduction of tariffs and safeguard measures against South Korean cars just a year after the South Korean-EU trade deal came into effect.

France made the request in a letter to the European Commission last Friday, explaining that in the French market this year overall cars sales have dwindled while sales of South Korea autos continue to jump.
