KCNA: NK, China Agree to Economic Zone Development

North Korea’s official Korean Central News Agency(KCNA) says Pyongyang and Beijing have agreed to boost joint development of the Hwanggeumpyeong and Wihwa islands and Rason City economic zones.

The news agency disclosed the results of a third meeting in Beijing Tuesday between a North Korean delegation led by Vice Chairman Jang Sung-thaek of the National Defense Commission and Chinese Commerce Minister Chen Deming.

On the Rason City zone, KCNA reports the two sides agreed to rebuild ports and railways and develop tourism and agriculture. Surveying for China’s power transmission to the North has been reportedly completed as well.

The news agency said North Korea and China also produced detailed plans for the development of Hwanggeumpyeong Island, emphasizing both countries have agreed to support their local governments and companies to actively develop the Wihwa region.

The agency added that the two countries will hold a fourth economic meeting in the first half of next year in Pyongyang.
