US Opposes UN Chiefs Participation in Upcoming Summit in Iran

The U.S. government expressed its opposition against UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s participation in the upcoming summit of the Non-Aligned Movement to be held in Iran at the end of the month.

U.S. State Department Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said during a regular press briefing that the upcoming summit goes against various international obligations and is held in a country that threatens neighboring countries, stressing the inappropriateness of the venue.

Nuland added that the U.S. conveyed its opposition against countries and Ban taking part.

Nuland said the UN hasn’t made an official announcement regarding Ban’s participation in the summit, but if he does in fact go, Washington hopes he will use the meeting as an opportunity to make the point of the international community’s broad concerns.
