Japan to Hold Cabinet Meeting to Discuss Dokdo

The Japanese government has decided to hold a Cabinet meeting on August 21, chaired by Prime Minister Noda Yoshihiko to discuss the issue of Dokdo.

A Japanese diplomatic source said various forms of action will be discussed at the meeting, including taking the Dokdo issue to the International Court of Justice(ICJ) and curbing a currency swap with South Korea.

The Japanese government is also looking into repeal its decision to buy won-based treasury bonds and upgrading a regional “Takeshima Day” event held in Shimane Prefecture to a government-hosted event. Support for private research on Dokdo is also on the agenda, the source said.

After the meeting, officials plan to deliver a verbal note, a diplomatic document unsigned but more formal than a verbal proposal to the South Korean government regarding Tokyo’s decision to take the Dokdo issue to the ICJ.
