S. Korea President Calls for Global Cooperation to Stabilize Grain Prices

South Korean President Lee Myung-bak has sent a letter to the leaders of G20 nations, calling for stronger global cooperation to bring the surging global grain prices under control.

In the letter, President Lee noted that the soaring grain prices could become a new risk factor that can hamper the recovery of the global economy.

He suggested that the G20 nations intensify efforts to increase agricultural production and productivity, discourage food export restriction measures, and eliminate restrictions on the exports of food products for humanitarian purposes.

Lee also called for a revision of bio-fuel policies to ease supply shocks and measures to prevent speculative activities.

The South Korean President also suggested holding a forum among G20 member nations during times of food crises to discuss ways to overcome the situation.
