The Japanese government will appeal a court order to disclose documents on the normalization of diplomatic relations between South Korea and Japan in 1965.
Japan’s newspaper the Asahi Shimbun reports that the Japanese government led by Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda decided to appeal the Tokyo District Court’s order to disclose many of the diplomatic documents.
The daily said that following the court order, Japan’s Foreign Ministry closely reviewed documents on the normalization of diplomatic relations with South Korea. The ministry concluded that it cannot make public some documents that may put Japan at a disadvantage in negotiations with South Korea over the Dokdo islets or with North Korea on normalizing diplomatic relations.
The court delivered the order on October eleventh, saying that the Japanese Foreign Ministry’s refusal to reveal the diplomatic document is unjustified. The order was the result of a suit filed by victims of Japan's sex slavery seeking disclosure of the documents. The court ruled partly in favor of the plaintiff.
