Assembly Adopts Resolution Denouncing Japan's Historical Distortions

The National Assembly’s Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee adopted a resolution condemning Japanese Cabinet members' recent visits to a controversial war shrine and remarks denying Japan's imperialistic past in Asia.

In the resolution adopted on Friday, the parliamentary committee deplored Japan’s recent moves, calling them anachronistic and a failure to break from the specter of militarism.

The committee said that Japan’s invasions and colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula are clearly recorded in history.

The committee also warned that Japan will lose its status as a responsible member of the global community if it continues its sharp turn to the right. The resolution also warned that Tokyo could face international criticism and end up being isolated with its warped view of history.

It urged the government to respond to Japan with stronger measures. The resolution follows Japanese Cabinet members and lawmakers’ visits to the Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s controversial remarks about Japan’s past invasions.
