The representatives for the nuclear six-party talks from South Korea, the U.S., and Japan have recently discussed the possibility of holding a three-way meeting in May.
According to Japan’s Asahi Shimbun, the meeting was discussed on Friday by South Korea’s envoy for the six-party talks, Lim Sung-nam, U.S. Special Representative of the Secretary of State for North Korea Policy, Glyn Davies, and Japan’s head of the Asian and Oceanic Affairs bureau, Shinsuke Sugiyama.
The report said the three were planning to discuss North Korea at the trilateral meeting, and also ways to recover bilateral relations between South Korea and Japan. Relations between the two countries have grown frigid in recent weeks after Japan’s Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, and other lawmakers paid respects to a war shrine, angering South Koreans. The report said Japan may also discuss a foreign ministers’ meeting with South Korea and the U.S. in May.
