Japan's Political Sector Aiming to Amend Peace Clause in Constitution

Japan’s ruling camp is moving to revise a peace clause in the nation’s constitution under which Japan renounces war and the threat or use of force as a means of settling international disputes.

After the collapse of Japanese imperialism in 1945, U.S. led efforts created Article 9, a clause established as Japan’s promise to the world that it will not possess a military.

However, Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party is now planning to amend the clause so Japan can have a military under the justification of guarding national peace and contributing to world peace.

With Japan set to mark the establishment of its constitution on Friday, efforts within Japan’s political sector to revise the constitution are likely to gain speed.
