Former US Pres. Carter Wants to Visit N. Korea

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter wants to visit North Korea to ease tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

Diplomatic sources say Carter recently sent a letter to U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry expressing wishes to visit Pyongyang. Sources said reports have yet to emerge of Kerry’s response to Carter’s letter.

Carter first visited the North in June 1994 during the North’s first nuclear crisis and met with then leader Kim Il-sung. His visit eventually led to the birth of the Geneva Agreed Framework later in the fall of that same year.

Carter also visited the North in 2010 to win the release of a detained American citizen. He also visited the communist state with members of "The Elders" group in April 2011.
