S. Korea Deploys Spike Missiles in Yeonpyeong, Baengnyeong Islands

South Korea’s military was found to have deployed Israeli-made Spike missiles on the islands of Yeonpyeong and Baengnyeong in the Yellow Sea.

A military official said Sunday that the deployed missiles had undergone capability tests in Israel, adding that North Korean coastal artillery installations inside mines are the missiles’ main target.

The missiles, which have a range of 25 kilometers, were reportedly deployed early this month.

Equipped with infrared seekers, Spike missiles can be launched from vehicles or helicopters and can accurately hit coastal artillery hidden inside North Korean mines.

Military authorities plan to spend around 55 billion won to buy around 100 Spike missiles.
