“Hwaryeohan Hyuga,” “D-War” Attract 4 Million Movie-Goers
Two Korean summer movies are proving to be box office gold, luring 4 million movie-goers each.
“Hwaryeohan Hyuga,” the historical non-fiction movie about the 1980 Gwangju uprising and massacre (directed by Kim Ji-Hoon), recorded its 4 millionth movie-goer on the 9th. This is the first Korean movie of the year to reach that mark. The controversial and emotional movie about the May 18th incident had received massive attention even before it hit theaters on July 25th.
Korean-made fantasy movie “D-War” is also smashing records this year. The Shim Hyeong Rae-directed film based on a Korean legend has also attracted 4 million movie-goers. Released on the 1st, “D-War” attracted this large number in a record 9 days.
Both movies are expected to surpass the 5 million mark this weekend.
