Lim Jeong-hee grew up in a musical environment in which her father was an ardent fan of pop music and a collector of countless music LPs. She grew up under the influence of classical music, even learning to play the piano. However, as she grew up, she gained more interest in pop music rather than classical music. In high school, Lim participated in a song contest for teens held by the Seoul City and took home the grand prize. The experience of competing in the song contest and winning the top prize confirmed her love for music, leading Lim to enter college to study mainstream music. Although she’s signed under a mainstream management company, working together with the likes of Rain, G.O.D., 2AM, and the Wonder Girls, Lim is more famous on the underground street music scene than on mainstream TV or radio. Even before she made an official debut in the local music industry, Lim has held countless street performances on her own, that led to the creation of her many fan clubs. Through street performances, Lim learned a lot about music and increased her love and passion towards the art. The talented singer also taught some of the most popular idol stars today, such as Jo-kwon from 2AM, Sunye from the Wonder Girls, and Min from Miss A.

Lim’s most representative song that launched her into popularity is undoubtedly “Music is My Life.” Right when she was really climbing the fame ladder, she announced her decision to leave for the U.S. in hopes of debuting there. There were reports that she would be teaming up with US artst, Outkast for her debut songs.

However, her timing couldn’t be more off. America, along with the rest of the world, saw one of the biggest economic downfalls since the Great Depression in 2008. This made it very difficult for Lim to get the necessary funding for her American activities. She claims that she learned a lot through her experience abroad, so she wouldn’t call it wasted time.

After three long years, Lim finally made her comeback in Korea with her title song “This Can’t Be Real”, produced by Bang Shi-hyuk. Bang was inspired by the film “Inception” for the moving ballad, which is about a girl unable to take in and believe that a breakup is real. Lim also released a duet song that shot to the top of the charts, featuring Jo-kwon.

With a quiet and soulful demeanor on the outside, Lim has powerful vocals that can blow anyone away. She’s not active on the variety TV scene, having more of a genuine spirit than a fast-paced, comedic or entertaining one. Also, she sticks with more ballads than your typical pulsing dance hits.

Many people are willing to bet though, that if anyone can make it in this industry through pure vocals and ballads alone, it’s Lim Jeong-hee.
