The Normcore Fashion Trend for Fall/Winter 2014
Temperatures are falling and it’s time for a wardrobe change. To help you stay on-trend, today I’m going to introduce tips on how to wear the normcore trend—the biggest thing in fashion at the moment.

Normcore—a combination of the words “normal” and “hardcore”—is the latest and the hottest unisex fashion trend characterized by average-looking clothing. Also referred to as “mom style” and “dad style,” the normcore trend reminiscent of the 80s and 90s uses looking “normal” as its core philosophy. According to fashion experts, the basic tenet of the latest normcore trend is conformity—meaning that when it comes to fashion this season, it’s all about blending in, rather than standing out.

To wear the normcore trend, start with unisex wardrobe staples—think simple and plain white undershirts, sweatshirts, flannel shirts, boyfriend jeans, elastic-waist sweatpants, and more. A typical normcore look is also characterized by no frills and no labels. To put together a chic normcore outfit, start with a simple sweatshirt. Opt for a loose, solid color sweatshirt teamed with a pair of comfy boyfriend jeans. Add a pair of sneakers (which are the foundation of any normcore outfit), a pair of aviator sunglasses and a tote bag, and you have an effortlessly chic normcore outfit. Another normcore staple that can be worn all season long is the flannel shirts. Opt for a flannel in subdued hues and pair it with a plain white undershirt and faded denim combo.

While the latest normcore trend is all about mixing and matching unpretentious, “normal-looking” clothes, there is a fine line between looking normcore and just sloppy. To look like the trendsetter on the streets while still wearing your everyday normal clothes, try to give your normcore outfits a bit of a subtle twist. For instance, when rocking sweatpants, mix it up with a blouse (but without the frills!) and a pair of sneakers. Comfortable yet oh-so stylish grey hoodie (an essential normcore item) can be worn with a pair of cropped pants. Don’t forget to add a pair of wayfarer sunglasses for a “too cool to care” look.

To rock normcore style at work, opt for must-have fall pieces like a plain grey knit sweater, a plain white shirt, a denim button-down, loose trousers and midi-length pencil skirts. Stick to neutral colors like creams, beiges, whites, greys, and blacks that will allow you to blend in. As for the shoes, opt for simple black pumps rather than the studded booties so you can really channel the look.

Dress normcore this fall and enjoy the low-pressure way to look like a runway model!
