Yu Taepyungyang, leading the next generation of young pansori singer

2016-10-04

Yu Taepyungyang is a gugak prodigy who sang the entire Heungboga pansori piece at age 6. Now 24 years old, Yu wanted to show that he has outgrown the title of a gugak prodigy and has now become a true pansori singer. And his debut performance as a grownup gugak artist was “L’Orfeo,” the National Changgeuk Company of Korea’s first attempt to blend changgeuk and opera. "L'Orfeo" was the perfect production for Yu, who had studied other music genres in South Africa and attempted to incorporate foreign musical elements into gugak.

Yu Taepyungyang seeks to popularize gugak. In order to achieve that goal, he will attempt to collaborate with the musicians from other genres. By incorporating the elements from theater plays, musical productions, and operas into gugak, he can show that gugak’s transformation can be limitless.
