Best of Itaewon

2016-10-12

While mostly ignored or avoided in the past, Itaewon has undergone a huge renaissance and is now one of Seoul’s most popular neighborhoods. Because of its heavy international residential population, Itaewon is largely considered one of the best areas to get authentic international cuisine including some of the country’s best and authentic Ethiopian, Indian, Thai and more. It also features restaurants that are vegetarian or with extensive vegetarian and vegan menu items.

Also because of the many international residents, Itaewon carries shops that are geared for taller and bigger sizes while high quality tailor shops that have been around for decades can be found here as well. Needing to pick up some food items or supplies from abroad? The many international marts around carries an extensive range of imported goods you’re not likely to find in a standard Korean supermarket. Antique lovers should check out the antique street where one can hunt for bargains and treasures.

Itaewon is home to Korea’s only mosque which also has a visitor center. Just remember to observe all cultural and religious observations such as dress codes. Around the mosque you’ll find plenty of halal shops and restaurants as well. Over in the eastern end of Itaewon, in Hannamdong, you’ll also find the Chabad Center for practicing Jews as well.

As popular as Itaewon is during the day, it’s also just as popular in the evenings. In addition to the numerous international restaurants as mentioned earlier, there are quite a few high end restaurants as well making Itaewon a popular place for dates. Itaewon is also famous for its numerous pubs, bars, lounges, and clubs making it particularly booming on weekends. Best of all, these venues all vary in style and crowd. Those wanting to take in a major sporting game can do so at one of the many sports bars, music lovers can find a lounge or club to their liking whether they’re into house, hip hop, or electronic music. Be sure to check the respective homepages of the area’s most popular clubs and lounge bars for dress codes, age restrictions, and any special events going on. Itaewon also happens to feature LGBQT-friendly bars and clubs making it one of Korea’s handful of areas for this community.

Itaewon and the surrounding area isn’t only about revelry though as culture lovers will appreciate the many offerings here. History lovers shouldn’t miss the War Memorial of Korea to get a real insight into the Korean War while the Leeum Samsung Museum of Art is one of Korea’s finest art institutions. Audiophiles will love the Hyundai Card Music Library and the Hyundai Vinyl & Plastic next door for their stunning music collection and live music offerings, not to mention their eye-catching architecture. Blue Square in Hannamdong is one of Seoul’s top venues for musicals and other similar performances.

While the main Itaewon station and immediate surrounding is the best known area, there are many smaller neighborhoods around that are fantastic to explore. Gyeongnidan, Haebangchon, and Itaewon 54 street (just behind the Hyundai Card Music Library) are home to largely non-commercial, independent boutique shops, eateries, cafes, and more. These pockets are a great alternative to the main Itaewon street and particularly popular with both locals and celebrities. However, as Itaewon continues to quickly gentrify on a daily basis, you may want to visit these places sooner rather than later.

For added excitement, you can visit Itaewon in the fall when the annual Itaewon Global Village Festival takes place. This festival celebrates the diversity of cultures in Itaewon with performances, food exhibitions, and activities from all over the world. Other exciting times for Itaewon include days of international festivals like St. Patrick’s Day and Halloween or major international sporting events such as the World Cup games.
