The U.S. Obama administration has welcomed remarks by North Korean leader Kim Jong-il that Pyongyang is working toward denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.

State Department spokesman Robert Wood told a briefing that "that’s a good thing" and urged North Korea to adhere to its agreement to take a number of steps toward denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.

He also said there would be a review of U.S. policy with regard to North Korea and that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton describes the six-party nuclear process as a vehicle and a framework that has merit.

Meeting with Chinese official Wang Jiarui in Pyongyang Friday, the North Korean leader said his country hopes to be peaceful with the six-way talk parties and is working toward denuclearizing the peninsula.
