EU Court Uses 'Sea of Japan' Label

Written: 2009-01-28 12:24:53Updated: 0000-00-00 00:00:00

The European Commission, a top European Union court, was found to be using the “Sea of Japan” label to describe the waters between Korea and Japan on its Web site.

The site also shows Korean territory extending only as far as Ulleung Island, excluding the Dokdo islets.

The commission labels the waters “The Sea of Japan,” rather than “The East Sea,” and has officially announced its use of the name “Yellow Sea,” not “The West Sea,” for the waters between Korea and China.

The Yellow Sea label was made at the request of Beijing.

The Korean Foreign Ministry has set up a task force to address the labeling and territorial discrepancies.
