The parliament of Thailand has approved the country's entry into the South Korea-ASEAN free trade agreement.

The FTA will take effect after it's signed by Korean and Thai trade ministers and ratified by their parliaments.

Under the deal, Korea will receive the same or comparable levels of access as Japan to Thai markets in chemicals, machinery, cars and cosmetics, which are Korea's staple export items.

South Korea and ASEAN began FTA negotiations in early 2005 and struck a deal in August 2006. Thailand decided to postpone its ratification of the agreement.
