UNDP to Partially Resume Operations in NK

The U.N. Development Program (UNDP) has announced it will only partially resume its operations in North Korea due to opposition from the United States and Japan.

Sources at the world organization said Monday that Washington and Tokyo opposed the U.N. relief agency’s resumption of operations in the communist state, citing problems with monitoring systems for relief operations. As a result, only a handful of the program’s projects will be resumed.

The UNDP left North Korea in 2007 amid U.S. charges of financial mismanagement.

The move is expected to affect the North’s future talks with Washington and Tokyo as the communist state had its sights set on a full resumption.
