Library of Congress Corrects Korean Island Labels

The U.S. Library of Congress has rectified its labeling of Korean islands in a map of South Korea posted on its Web site.

A new map on Wednesday labeled Jeju Island and Ulleung Island as belonging to South Korea, not Japan. It also labeled the waters between South Korea and Japan as both the East Sea and the Sea of Japan.

However, the map does not include the Dokdo islets. The South Korean embassy in Washington is requesting that the islets be included and labeled as Korean territory in the new map.

The Korean embassy says the Library of Congress had not been aware of the discrepancies and decided to correct the labels after they became a controversy in South Korea.
