Clinton: Goal is to Denuclearize NK

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says her objective during her tour of Asia is to set the stage for a full denuclearization of North Korea.

In a news conference Monday before embarking on her four-nation tour, Clinton said a “denuclearization” of North Korea means the North must completely and verifiably divulge what nuclear programs it has and eliminate its reprocessed plutonium.

She also clarified that denuclearization and agreeing to nonproliferation are preconditions to any future economic cooperation between the two nations. She affirmed that the Obama administration is open to a peace treaty, normalizing ties and extensive economic and energy aid provision should the North comply.

Clinton blasted the Bush administration for allowing the Geneva Agreed Framework to become a nonissue, which she said, set the table for North Korea’s development of a nuclear arsenal.
