The Japanese government is seeking to issue a joint statement with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on North Korea’s launch of a long-distance rocket which occurred Sunday morning.

Japan’s public broadcaster NHK said Tokyo is pressing the member countries to adopt a joint statement condemning Pyongyang’s rocket launch at the upcoming ASEAN Summit in Thailand.

All 16 ASEAN members and South Korea, China and Japan will take part in the summit this weekend.

NHK added that the adoption of the joint statement may face some opposition as Vietnam, which has an amicable relationship with North Korea, is among the summit participants.
