UNSC Fails to Convene for 2nd Day

The U.N. Security Council has again failed to convene a meeting to respond to North Korea’s rocket launch.

The council’s permanent members and Japan failed to meet for the second straight day on Thursday, saying they are sticking to their basic stances on the North’s rocket launch.

The United States and Japan are looking to the council to come up with a strong response to the North's rocket launch, including increased sanctions, while China and Russia have resisted such actions, urging caution in addressing the matter.

Mexico's U.N. Ambassador Claude Heller, who holds the council's rotating presidency this month, said the council is hoping to draw up an agreement among key members to send a strong message to the communist state. However, he said the process is expected to take time.

Asked about when the council will convene their next meeting, Heller said he’s hoping for Friday.
