Japan Withholds Trade Ban on NK

Japan has decided to withhold a total trade ban on North Korea, but will seek additional sanctions against Pyongyang for its recent rocket launch.

The decision seems to be based on the judgment that a trade ban would be an ineffective sanction because Japan’s exports to the North are minimal.

The Japanese government plans to require those who send over ten million yen to North Korea to report to the government. The current minimum is 30 million yen.

Visitors to North Korea will also be required to declare cash over 300-thousand yen.

The Japanese government will also move to extend existing sanctions against Pyongyang by one year in a Cabinet meeting Friday.
