Japan Says NK Launched a Missile

Japan has concluded that a rocket North Korea claims it launched on Sunday was actually a missile.

Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Takeo Kawamura told a news conference Friday that it could not confirm any transmissions from a satellite the North claims it put into orbit on Sunday.

Kawamura stressed that the true nature of the launch was related to Pyongyang’s ballistic missile development, although a close analysis of the rocket trajectory and speed will be necessary for confirmation.

Kawamura’s comments on Friday are the first time Tokyo has referred to the North’s Sunday rocket launch as a missile launch.

The reclusive country is banned from firing ballistic missiles by the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1718.
