UNSC Statement on NK Rocket Looming

Five key member nations of the U.N. Security Council have agreed to adopt a chairman's statement denouncing North Korea’s April 5 rocket launch.

The five permanent members and Japan agreed Saturday to adopt a chairman’s statement that not only condemns the launch but also asks the U.N. sanctions committee to produce a new list of individuals and companies subject to U.N. sanctions. The five members are the United States, Britain, France, China and Russia.

The U.S. ambassador to the world body, Susan Rice, told reporters that the statement will send a clear message to Pyongyang that “its violation of international law will not be treated with impunity and will indeed have consequences.”

The 15 members of the council could all adopt the statement as early as Monday, when they will hold a closed-door meeting on Saturday’s draft.
