Japan's opposition Democratic Party will reportedly maintain the incumbent government's tough stance towards North Korea if it wins an election this month.

Akihisa Nagashima, deputy secretary-general of the Democratic Party, on Thursday told Reuters that there is no practical option for the party other than to seek a comprehensive solution linking the issue of Japanese abductees and the nuclear and missile issues within the framework of the six-party nuclear talks.

Nagashima also said that as long as the abductee issue is not resolved or there is no progress, there will be no large scale aid for North Korea.

The Democratic Party is widely expected to win an election on August 30th.
