The Indian Coast Guard has detained a "suspicious" North Korean ship off the Andaman and Nicobar Islands after a six-hour chase.
The Times of India said Saturday that the North Korean ship MV Musen dropped anchor off Hut Bay Wednesday without permission. The newspaper said that when a Coast Guard vessel approached, the ship tried to escape, forcing Indian coastguardsmen to fire in the air. The North Korean ship finally “obeyed” and the ship was brought to port.
The report said that officials of Indian Army intelligence, the nation’s Intelligence Bureau and other agencies were set to inspect the ship and interrogate its crew.
A Coast Guard official said preliminary investigations show that the vessel was carrying 16-thousand-500 tons of sugar from Thailand to Umm Qasr in Iraq. He added that the ship’s log book was vague.
The ship, with 39 people on board, is currently docked at Port Blair.
