Former Clinton Aide Says NK Leader ‘Fully Engaged’ in Talks

A Clinton administration aide says the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-il, was “fully engaged” during recent talks with the former U.S. President in Pyongyang.

John Podesta told reporters the reclusive North Korean leader and Clinton had straightforward discussions.

Podesta accompanied Clinton on his trip to Pyongyang last week to facilitate the release of two American journalists who had been detained in the North since March.

He also said the journalists Euna Lee and Laura Ling were quite emotional when they were granted a “special pardon,” adding it was an amazing experience.

Clinton and Podesta jointly briefed a White House national security staffer on the North Korea visit. He added that they are still working on a plan to meet with U.S. President Barack Obama.

Podesta served as the White House chief of staff under Clinton from 1998 to 2001 and as a chief of the Obama transition team.
