Major overseas news outlets are reporting the death of former President Kim Dae-jung as breaking news.

Japanese public broadcaster NHK interrupted the broadcast of a popular sporting event to report the death of the former South Korean president. Included in the report was a brief summary of his life and achievements.

China’s state-run Xinhua News reported Kim’s death as breaking news and issued hourly news updates.

CNN, the Associated Press (AP), Reuters, BBC and the New York Times all outlined the former president’s achievements, including his stormy political career, the Sunshine Policy toward North Korea and the first-ever inter-Korean summit talks, which earned him the Nobel Peace Prize.

A number of major Arab media outlets, such as Al-Jazeera, reported the news in headlines.
