'US Would Send Ground Troops to S.Korea in an Emergency'

The U.S. says it has tested the mobilization of its troops for three types of emergency situation scenarios, including one involving the Korean Peninsula.

Vice Admiral Stephen Stanley, director for force structure, resources and assessment at the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said at a hearing of the House Armed Services Committee that troop mobilization efforts were tested for three scenarios.

He said the scenarios focused on addressing emergency situations in regions other than Iraq and Afghanistan, adding that South Korea was included as one of the three scenarios.

Stanley made clear that the U.S. would provide ground troops that would support U.S. forces in the South in the event an emergency situation develops on the Korean Peninsula.
