Top Chinese Official Heads for North Korea

The head of the international department of China’s Communist Party left China for North Korea aboard a Koryo Air flight on Saturday.

Wang Jiarui is expected to stay in North Korea for four days and return home on Tuesday.

Although the details of his schedule in Pyongyang have yet to be released, he is expected to hold meetings with high-level officials of the North’s Workers’ Party and its government on Sunday.

Wang will likely meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-il and deliver to Kim a letter from Chinese President Hu Jintao.

Attention is drawn to whether Wang’s visit will provide a breakthrough to the stalled six-party nuclear talks.

Nothing has changed in regards to the possibility of a resumption of the talks, even after U.S. special representative for North Korea policy Stephen Bosworth's visit to Pyongyang two months ago.
