Pro-Korea Congresswoman to Retire from Congress

A prominent African-American congresswoman who has been actively involved in Korea-related affairs in the U.S. has announced that she will retire from Congress.

Representative Diane Watson announced at her district office in Los Angeles Thursday that she will not seek reelection for the 33rd Congressional District seat, which includes Koreatown. Watson has held the post since 2001.

The 76-year-old lawmaker said she wants to spend more “quality time” with her mother, who recently turned 100.

Watson has actively taken part in events hosted by the Korean-American community for years, not only in L.A. but also in Washington.

Watson’s term ends in December.
