North Korea’s top nuclear envoy Kim Kye-kwan, who is visiting China, is coordinating bilateral discussions on the resumption of the six-nation talks with China’s top nuclear envoy Wu Dawei on Friday.

Watchers say that North Korea will likely demand again that China be more active in helping lift U.N. sanctions on North Korea in exchange for Pyongyang’s return to the nuclear talks.

Pyongyang also wants to sign a peace treaty with the United States.

It appears that China will first explain the fundamental stance of South Korea, the U.S. and Japan, who want to begin the six-way talks first. Experts predict that China will then focus on finding a way to coordinate between the different positions.

A diplomatic source in Beijing said the fact that the discussions are continuing into the fourth day indicates that coordination is difficult. Conversely, the source added, it also means that efforts for coordination are continuing.

Kim is scheduled to return to Pyongyang on Saturday.
