The United States plans to ease regulations on exports of technology items that can be used for military purposes to 37 allies.
The U.S. Department of Commerce said Friday that it is asking related U.S. industries to consider ways to ease restrictions regarding exports of such items as part of a move to boost U.S. exports. The items include technologies such as navigation systems and electronic components.
According to a draft of the revised regulations, U.S. industries will not be required to get prior approval from the government when exporting technology items that can be used for military purposes to 37 countries, including South Korea, Germany and Japan.
U.S. President Barack Obama says the revised regulations will help meet his goal of doubling U.S. exports.
Last year, Commerce Secretary Gary Locke called for the abolishment of the export regulations for U.S. allies and has since worked actively to ease related rules.
