US Urges China to Influence NK Actions, Behavior

The U.S. is reiterating that China should play an active role in persuading North Korea to cease its provocations in order to ensure peace and stability in Northeast Asia and on the Korean Peninsula.

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said in a news briefing Thursday that China is in a position to have a strong influence over the actions and behavior of the North Koreans. He then said it is Washington’s belief that China should use its influence to assist in efforts to stabilize the region.

Gibbs added that a delegation of top U.S. diplomats, led by Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg, will convey the same message when it visits China next week.
