Russia Urges Restraint on Korean Peninsula Provocations

Russia is urging all sides to restrain from provocative behavior amid increased tensions on the Korean Peninsula that have resulted from North Korea’s artillery attack on South Korea’s Yeonpyeong Island last month.

Moscow's deputy envoy on North Korea Grigory Logvinov told a news conference Friday that the situation on the Korean Peninsula is in a heated state and that measures are necessary to ease the tension.

He said Russia hopes all concerned parties will refrain from acts that can aggravate the situation.

The envoy said it's necessary to consider the fostering of conditions that would facilitate the resumption of the stalled six-way nuclear talks.

He noted that no party has resisted the need to return to the dialogue table or the need to resolve problems through political and diplomatic means.

Russian officials will meet with North Korean Foreign Minister Pak Ui-Chun and South Korea's top nuclear envoy Wi Sung-lac to discuss the situation. Both have visits to Moscow planned for next week.
