Violent Protest at S.Korean Factory in Bangladesh Wounds 12

Workers staged a protest against a South Korean-owned garment factory in Chittagong, southeastern Bangladesh, demanding an income hike.

As the result, twelve people, including two company officials, were wounded.

Local police said one-sixth of the factory’s workers, which is about six-thousand workers, that staged a strike, started protesting on streets, armed with bricks and rods.

They smashed computers, furniture and motor vehicles in eleven areas of the plant, saying that even though the government had decided to raise minimum wage, the company had not increased their wages.

The company stated that their workers’ wages were already above minimum wage level, also adding that the company had been working on devising relevant plans.
