New Regulations on Catching Tuna in the Pacific

New regulations have been put in place to protect tuna stocks in the Pacific Ocean.

The Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission International, an organization that aims to conserve and manage fish stocks in the Pacific Ocean, annouced plans to reduce the catches in the western and central Pacific Ocean, including the East Sea, during 2011 and 2012.

Some of the media claimed that the new regulations were proposed by Japan in order to cut down on the amount of fish South Korea catches. However, South Korea was not subject to this round of cuts.

Yet there was a specific clause by the commision stating that South Korea should also take necessary measures to regulate the amount of its catch of young tuna.

So, the media interpreted that the Commission would likely step up pressure on Korea to place a cap on the number of tuna it catches.
