'Slim Chance Missing Sailors are Alive'

Written: 2010-12-14 08:19:42Updated: 2010-12-14 13:52:45

New Zealand media say there is very little possibility that the 17 missing crew members of a South Korean fishing vessel that sank in waters off Antarctica on Monday are alive.

The media said that none of the missing sailors have been found since search and rescue efforts for the 17 crew members were launched after the boat went down. The media said that given the temperature of the water where the ship sank, a person could only survive in the water for ten minutes at most.

The media quoted New Zealand maritime police officials as saying that the 600-ton “No. 1 In Sung” with 42 crew members apparently sank quickly, citing that the sailors who were rescued were not wearing life vests.

New Zealand’s officials have suspended search and rescue operations given their assessment that the possibility the missing sailors are alive is slim.
