'Republicans to Use KORUS FTA as Leverage for Columbia Deal'

Written: 2010-12-15 06:55:49Updated: 2010-12-15 10:04:56

U.S. Republican congressional leaders are reportedly planning to use a new trade deal with South Korea as leverage to take action on a long-delayed agreement with Colombia.

According to the U.S. multimedia political news source “Politico” on Tuesday, the Republican members of Congress believe that linking the South Korea and Colombia pacts will make President Barack Obama’s new embrace of trade politically costly for him with his own party, which overwhelmingly opposes free trade pacts.

The report cited that as a presidential candidate, Obama condemned the free trade pact negotiated with Colombia in 2006 under President George W. Bush as unacceptable because of Columbia’s record of impunity for those who murder union organizers.
