Top nuclear envoy Wi Sung-lac met with his Russian counterpart Alexei Borodavkin in Moscow on Wednesday to discuss North Korea and the security situation in Northeast Asia.

Wi said that during the meeting, he conveyed to Borodavkin that Seoul does not feel that now is the appropriate time to resume the stalled six-party nuclear talks.

Wi instead called for increased international pressure on the North to deter it from pursuing further provocations.

The call comes amid an artillery attack on South Korea’s Yeonpyeong Island last month and Pyongyang’s revelation of a uranium enrichment facility.

Russia denounced the attack but also conveyed its hope for dialogue in order to keep tensions from escalating.
