EU Expresses Support for UN Chief's Bid to Seek 2nd Term

The European Union (EU) has expressed support for U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s bid to seek a second five-year term.

High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton said Wednesday that the EU welcomes Ban's announcement to run for a second term.

Ashton said that Ban’s intention is very good news for the United Nations and for the international community which he has served tirelessly.

She added that during a period of great turmoil on many fronts, Ban has ensured a steady and determined leadership.

Out of the five permanent member states of the U.N. Security Council, the United States, Britain, China and France have expressed support toward Ban’s bid. Russia has yet to unveil its position on the matter.
