UNSC to Vote on Recommendation for Ban's Reelection Friday

The U.N. Security Council will carry out a formal vote by acclamation recommending Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s reelection to the U.N. General Assembly on Friday, local time.

The council was initially set to vote on Thursday but delayed the plan after it decided to first address urgent matters, including how to resolve ongoing turmoil in the Middle East and North Africa.

During closed-door discussions on Thursday, none of the council members expressed opposition to Ban serving as U.N. chief for a second term.

Russia was the last of the five permanent members of the Security Council to express its support for Ban’s reelection.

The U.N.’s 192 member countries will hold its election for the secretary general next Tuesday during a General Assembly.
