UN Chief Ban Reelected for 2nd Term

U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has been reelected to serve the world organization for a second five-year term.

Ban was reelected by acclamation on Tuesday afternoon by the U.N.’s 192-member General Assembly. His reelection was expected as the Security Council last week recommended that the former South Korean foreign minister continue to lead the U.N.

U.N. General Assembly President Joseph Deiss noted that Ban has worked hard toward tackling climate change and realizing nuclear disarmament as well as helping women and children. Deiss said he hopes Ban will also reap success in his second term.

Ban first took the helms of the U.N. in 2007 as the eighth secretary-general. His first term ends at the end of December and his second term will begin on January first of next year.
