UN Chief Pledges Full Commitment in Serving 2nd Term

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says he is “proud and humbled to accept” the appointment of a second term as U.N. chief.

In his acceptance speech after being reelected by the U.N. General Assembly on Tuesday, Ban said the U.N. must “do more to connect the dots” among challenges the world is facing so that solutions to one international problem become solutions for all.

He said that "as never before, the U.N. is on the front of people and also helping build the peace in Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Somalia; in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Middle East."

Ban stressed that the role of the U.N. is to lead, adding that in order to do so the world organization must deliver results that people can see and touch and make a difference.

He then pledged his "full commitment, energy and resolve to uphold the fundamental principles of the U.N. Charter."
