United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has stressed that South Korea should contribute to the international community what is expected of it.
The just-reelected U.N. chief spoke in a news conference with South Korean media in New York on Wednesday. He said he felt a burden due to the international community’s high expectations towards South Korea.
Ban said that South Korea enjoys a high standing globally as the nation hosted the G20 summit in 2010, and will also host the 2012 Nuclear Security Summit. The U.N. chief added that South Korea must make corresponding contribution to the international community.
He also touched on security issues of the Korean Peninsula, saying that the two Koreas must hold talks and increase exchanges and cooperation, while the denuclearization of North Korea should be resolved through the six-party talks.
On a visit to North Korea that Ban has proposed, he said he would decide on that at a suitable time and depending on expectations towards resolution of current issues. Ban confirmed that he would visit the North when conditions are met.
