UN World Summit of Prosecution Chiefs Opens

The Fourth UN World Summit of Prosecutors General, Attorneys General and Chief Prosecutors opened Thursday at the COEX Convention Center in Seoul.

Prosecutor General Kim Joon-gyu spoke at the opening ceremony. He called for the basic duties of prosecutors to be better enforced in order to protect the public from crime. The Supreme Prosecutors’ Office is hosting the summit.

President Lee Myung-bak and chiefs of prosecution from some 90 nations attended the opening ceremony and U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon even submitted a videotaped congratulatory address.

The summit is themed "New Initiatives of the Prosecution Service." The participants will seek action plans to eliminate international crime. The summit will close after adopting the Seoul Declaration on Friday.
